POETRY ANALYSIS

ANALYSIS OF POETRY:   FLOWER IN THE CRANNIED WALL

                            FLOWER IN THE CRANNIED WALL

                                           Flower in the crannied wall
I pluck you out of the crannies
I hold you here, root and all, in my hand
Little flower – but if I could understand
What you are, root and all, and all in all
I should know what God and man is

SENSE
Is the subject matter which is given by the writter in the poem. Subject matter of a poem can be about nature, love, mankind, and many more. Subject matter usually given by the writter either directly and indirectly in their poem. But sometime, the reader must guess the subject matter in the poem by themselves. And in this poetry has also a subject matter in it. Just at the moment we read the tittle of the poem,”flower in the crannied wall” we may think that the subject matter in the poem is all about nature, or something, because writter says something like flower and wall. But we cannot conclude that it is the subject matter yet before we read the whole part of the poem.If we miss even one word, we may never find the right subject matter of the poem, because the power of the poem lays on the word.In the poem, a word can change everything else.at the first five line of the poem, we can see the writter talks about the flower in the wall. But in the last line of the text, the writter suddenly says God and man.
So we can think that the writter illustrate God and man just like flower in the wall.At the first line , the writter says:
                                       Flower in the crannied wall
The writter exampled Man as flower,God is exampled as the root of the flower, and the wall is exampled as universe. But why the flower cling on the crannied wall?it shows life in the universe. And there is only one place in the universe where life does exist, which is  earth. At the third and fourth line , writter says:
I pluck you out of the crannies
I hold you here, root and all, in my hand

It is a condition where the flower is plucked from the crannies by someone to seek where actually the flower comes from by see the root of the flower. At he fourth, fifth, and sixth lines, writter says
Little flower – but if I could understand
What you are, root and all, and all in all
I should know what God and man is

It explain that Subject “I” in the poem feels curious about the provenance  of everything which is living on earth.Word”little flower” actually is a small thing which does exist in the very wide universe. That is man .Word “root and all””and all in all” explains about how God an man in a relation, and relation from both of them with the universe or nature. Then we can take one simple conclusion that the poem is to contemplate how littleman understands the meaning of both his and God’s existance, and whether true unity exists between nature, and the divine. The main topic of the poem is discovering who God and man in relation to one another

FEELING
Is writter’s attitude toward subject matter in the poem.Every writter has a different opinion in facing a problem in the poetry. In this story, writter wants to criticize something which is about the thing he cannot solve yet.Besides, he also expresses his feeling so good by placing himself in the poem as the subject “I” in it. He feels so wonder about the beginning or the germinal of everything’ life around him.The sense of curiousity he has ,is illustrated  to the flower and the wall to make it simpler and easier to understand and to explain one by one in the wall such as flower, root of the flower, and the wall. Over all , the writter’s attitude toward the poem is clearly very illustrative.

TONE
Tone is writter’s attitude toward the reader of their poetry. Commonly, the writter’s attitude toward the reader can be sugestif, persuasif arrogant, and many more. After reading the whole parts of the poem, it is of course ce see that the writter’s attitude is very guessing.and also he includes himself in the poem as the subject “I”. At the fourth line, the writter says:
Little flower – but if I could understand
That sentence indicates that the writter takes time to guess the thing he cannot understand yet. That sentence also explain that the writter’s attitude toward reader is mostly guessing and also giving illustrattion to the reader about God man and universe in the relation to one another.

INTENTION
Is the purpose of the poem the writter wants to intend to all the reader. It is impossible that a poetry is written without any intention in it, at least to express the feeling of the writter. After analyzing the sense, tone, and the feeling of this poetry, then we can now find and conclude that the intention of this poetry is to explain how man ,God does exist , besides this poetry  is also intends to persuade the reader to involve themselves in finding one best answer from the subject matter in the poem. At the fourth and fifth line, writter says:
Little flower – but if I could understand
What you are, root and all, and all in all
Those two lines are the subject matter in the poetry which he wants to solve that he still not be able to solve. Sentence ”But if I could understands” is one of the most important line in this poem. Indirectly, the writter asks the reader to think and try to understand about their existance and everything around the. And also the writter wants that the reader feels what the writter is feeling.reader is demanded to dig deeper about who they are and their relation to their almightly creator. Writter wrote first five lines of this poem with all about his curiousity and questions in it only to one intention which is so hard to find. And the only intentions he wants to reach he wrote in the last line in his poem.

TYPE OF POEM
When we see from the type of the poem, thiss poetry is actually one of the poem which is reflective. Reflective poem is a thoughtful poem  containing of a great description which the poets comments on as form upon which be drawn as conclusion. This poetry is reflective because writter explain one thing or condition by giving an illustration to explain the thing he means. Word “flower” reflected man in the real condition. It makes reader easier to understand and to catch the meaning the writter intends to.

POETICAL TECHNIQUE
-REPETITION
writter use repetition to emphasize the meaning or the thing they think important to deliver. Repetition can be repetition of word, repetition of line, or repetition of stanza. In this poem , writter repeat word only. At the third to fifth lines, writter says:
I hold you here, root and all, in my hand
Little flower – but if I could understand
What you are, root and all, and all in all
L.A Tennyson, the writter of this poem repeat word”root and all” from the line three to the line five. And after that he wrote”and all in all” afterward. He did such that thing because he                wants us to catch the point he wants to deliver. We know that “root” is actually God or  creator of everything, and “all” is everthing which is created by the creator. He repeat word “root and all” to emphasize that God is something like root of a plant. Without root, it means nothing because every part of the plant depends on the root. Root gives the needs of the stem , the leaves, and the flower of the plants. We cannot see the root of the plants because it is buried in the ground. We can only see the stem , leaves and the flower. So, that’s why subject”I” pluck the flower to see the root.
Word “all in all” shows that the flower is clinged on the wall in the crannies. The first “all” indicates God and man As plant of flower. The second “all”indicates the crannied wall where the flower hangs. With the flower on it, it makes the wall looks more beautifull and colorful. In the real condition, we can say that with the existance of life in the universe, it makes universe more unique and more beautiful. At the end we know that, by repeating word” root and all” and all in all, we  can understand about God’s existance, man existance ,their relation each other and the true unity between nature and divine.
